Grout and tile options come in a variety of patterns, colors, styles and textures. With their durability, longevity, and increased resistance to many natural elements, tile and grout are commonly used in households across the country. Though tile and grout can withstand a lot of abuse, there is some causes that can cause early deterioration and we at D&M Carpet Cleaning would like to share them today to help.
Reduce Use of Harmful Cleaning Chemicals on Tile & Grout
Early grout and tile deterioration can occur when people use the wrong or harsh chemicals to clean the tile, especially for specific natural stone. Professional cleaning is encouraged 1-3 times a year, particularly where they use safe, but effective products. During your own washing maintenance, be sure use a mild, appropriate cleaner. If you have natural stone tile be sure, the product clearly states the type on the label. If you are not sure if a product is safe, stick to using only plain water to wash away spots and residues.
Poor Tile & Grout Installation & Neglecting Maintenance
The grout and tile are sealed at the time of installation. To help keep the moisture and other substance out, the sealant acts as a barrier. However, the sealants eventually wear, and a new coat will be needed. Tile and grout require a new coat of sealant annually, maybe more so in high traffic areas.
Tile & Grout Sealer Test
Drop an ounce of water in a small area including both tile and grout. Within a few moments, the water will either leave dark water spots, indicated it absorbed past the surface, and requires a sealant. Should the water simply bead up and remain on the surface, the sealant is intact and not required at this time.
Excessive Moisture Exposure
Where tile and grout are often chosen due to the moisture resistance, excessive exposure can still be detrimental to grout. Easily absorption to everything, especially moisture, grout is a highly porous substance. Without preventative measures, the grout starts to crack and crumble from the growth mold and bacteria that is encouraged to grow. The mold and bacteria growth will easily affect you and your family members, including pets’ health in addition to the early deterioration it causes.
How to Avoid Needing Repair for Cracked Grout
There are a few simple solutions to avoid early grout deterioration caused by moisture, especially in rooms such as bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms. In addition to rooms that are subject to high moisture content or live in high humidity where moisture tends to cling to all surfaces, be sure to invest in professional cleanings -3 times a year in addition to your own regularly scheduled routine maintenance. Never leave any damp or wet rugs settle on the floor. If they get wet or damp, hang them to dry before placing them back on the surface. Also, never let any wet towels linger. Any shower drips and spills should be quickly cleaned dry as well and avoid walking on the tile and grout in wet shoes. To help control moisture where applicable, utilize exhaust fans.
If you used low quality grout, or suspect it was used, consider replacing the grout as it will decay fast, leaving your tile susceptible to damage.
