Pet Stain Remover; How to Remove Old, Set In Dog or Cat Urine Stains from Carpet in Atlanta, GA

We love our pets and can’t imagine life without them, but as cute as they are, they can damage our carpets. There are three ways that pet urine can damage our carpet; staining, odors and discoloration.

How Do You Clean Up Dog Urine on the Carpet & Get Rid of the Smell?

There are factors that will determine how strong your pet’s urine smells. The construction, density and fiber type will all affect pet urine differently and your pets diet will also be a factor. These all determine the amount of salt that stays in the carpet. You may be surprised to learn that the residue left behind after the urine has dried are salt crystals. After the moisture evaporates, the crystals are left behind. Those crystals will have a reaction with the moisture in the air and produce a gas. That smell you’re smelling is the gas coming off the salt crystals. Urine smells will be stronger when humidity levels in the home change. Smells will be stronger in the spring and summer versus the fall and winter. If those crystals aren’t removed you will be dealing with the odors for as long as the stain remains. Airing out your home will do nothing to get rid of the smell either. The urine crystals have to be removed from the fibers and the carpet backing. If the stain is really bad, you may need to get to the pad and the subfloor may even need to be replaced.

Store Bought Carpet Cleaning Chemicals & Supplies

Wander the aisle at the store and you’ll come across all sorts of products that “claim” to get pet urine odor out of your carpet. These are just covering up the stain with a nice smell. All these do put a layer of a stronger scent on top of the urine smell. This is only a temporary fix. There are some products you can buy that have an enzyme in them that can digest the urine salts. The only problem is that the temperature needs to be just right for the enzymes to work correctly. The pH of the carpet also needs to be right and there can’t be any other cleaners left behind on the carpet or it just won’t work. These enzymes also need to completely saturate the carpet for at least 24 hours to be effective but the required saturation can damage the backing of your carpet and break it down. This can leave bubbling or wrinkling in the carpet. These products can leave a sticky residue behind if they are rinsed correctly.
