Some tile and especially grouts are very porous, which make it difficult to clean. In these tiny pores is where mold and mildew is born. When it comes time to tackle this project, it is important to come well armed and equipped with the proper cleaning tools and chemicals to kill and remove the molds and mildew.
Step 1. You will need to remove the stain from the grout and tile. Start by making your own homemade cleaning paste to clean stains. With warm water, mix in scouring powder with a one to one part to create a paste. Then rub the paste on the stains and allow it to sit for 5 to 10 minutes. Then use a soft bristled brush and scrub. Wash with warm soapy water.
Step 2. Now it is time to clean the mold and mildew. When cleaning molds and mildews it helps to have extra ventilation. If possible, have a window open. Using a cleaning solution of water and ammonia. Again use half and half to clean the mold and mildew off of your tile and grout. You can use either a spray bottle or a bucket with a sponge. The ammonia will kill the molds and mildew. Note: Make sure to wear rubber gloves.
Step 3. For deeper cleaning of your grout a No. 2 pencil eraser work wonders. You can clean in the smallest of cracks that is difficult to reach. This gives your grout a more thorough and detailed cleaning.
Step 4. To give your grout a cleaner, brighter look, you can also do this little extra step. Make another paste by using water and baking soda, then use a toothbrush or a soft bristle brush and scrub the paste on the grout. White wine vinegar and water also will work just as well.
Step 5. Regular cleaning and maintenance is your best way to fight against mold and mildew. Some will keep a dry towel or cloth to the wipe down their bath room after use to prevent moisture from setting to long and creating mold or mildew.
