Cleaning, Drying & Removing Old, Tough Spilled Water Stains from Carpet in Decatur, GA

In most cleaning projects, water is a common ingredient, but even water spills on your carpets can leave noticeable spots on the surface. Generally, if a stain forms from a water spill, it likely the excess minerals in hard water that are creating the stain and/or the dirt and debris below the surface have risen and become more compacted in that area, making it look like an eyesore. The longer the water lingers, the chances of it becoming more obvious increases and it can also lead to potential water damage to the subfloor and even contribute to mold growth. Prevention is always best and when the spills occur, you should promptly use a dry cloth, towel, or paper towels to blot out as much water as possible. However, we at DM Carpet Cleaning would like to take a moment to elaborate further.

Cleaning Solutions Mixture

In an empty squirt bottle, combine about a cup of water with ¼ teaspoon of a mild dish soap to start. Be sure to allow the soap to completely absorb into the water before using. This mixture is frequently used due to its powerful effectiveness to combat moisture, dirt, and other tough substances.

How to Remove Water Stains from Carpet

Spray the solution onto a clean cloth, be sure it is only lightly misted and not too wet. Avoid over-saturation on the cloth, to prevent it from occurring on the carpets. As mentioned, too much water can lead to water damage and mold growth. Blot the water stain with your treated cloth with gentle and quick movements. Continue to blot until the dirt and debris is broken up. Once the dirt is loose, rinse out the cloth and treat it with the same solution, avoid oversaturation. To avoid worsening the issue, avoid scrubbing and rubbing the area as it will only spread the filth out further and is push it deeper into the carpet’s fibers. Repeat until dirt is lifted. If necessary, have a clean, dry cloth or paper towels on standby to blot in between applications to prevent the area from getting too wet. After the spot is dissolved, use a clean cloth, damp with pure water, to rinse out the solution until you are sure there are no residues. Do not over saturate and use a dry cloth in between if necessary. You will want to expedite the drying by first using dry cloth or paper towels to absorb as much excess moisture as possible. Follow up by placing a clean, dry towel over the top of the treated area and then place heavy objects to weigh it done, let it set over night. Sprinkle baking soda to the area generously and leave it for 2-3 hours. This will help dry out any lingering moisture and neutralize any developing odors. After the allotted time is up, vacuum the particles well by going over it slowly and in multiple directions.
