Moving is the worst! It is one of the most dreaded affairs across the board. If you are moving into a home that has a decent amount of hardwood, you are surely going to want to take some measures to offer it protection. If you don’t work to protect it, you could end up with damaged floors and a need for expensive repair. DM Carpet Cleaning is here to share some tips to help you protect your hardwood flooring during a move.
Always Use Doormats
The first few steps someone takes in your home should always be on a doormat. This allows the dirt and debris that is found on the bottom of shoes to rub off before touching your hardwood flooring. With the amount of foot traffic that will be coming and going during your move, you will want at least one, maybe even more, doormats that cover a significant amount of space in your entryway.
Area Rugs & Runners Will Protect Hardwood Hallways & Main Living Spaces
You will want the high traffic areas of your hardwood covered to avoid any scratching and other damage during a move. Before you put the brand new ones that you bought for your new home, use the old ones during the move. They will likely take some abuse with so many people walking in and out. If there is bad weather, they will be wet and more likely to come away with some staining. At the very least, you should have your hallways and main living spaces covered with area rugs and runners.
How to Move Furniture on Hardwood Flooring
This one might be obvious, but you should never drag heavy furniture across your hardwood flooring. This can cause deep scratches that will be incredibly difficult to get rid of. You will have to refinish the flooring and even then, it may not completely get rid of scratches if they are deep enough. Furniture sliders will make moving large objects easy and keep your floor safe as well. One thing to remember before using furniture sliders is to check the wheels to make sure they are clean and don’t have any rough edges that will cause scratching.
Utilize Extra Cardboard as Furniture Sliders
If you can’t get your hands on some furniture sliders, consider using any extra cardboard you may have lying around to move furniture around the room. This will place a barrier beneath your furniture and hardwood to avoid damage. Another option is also a roll of floor protection. With a sticky backing, it will not move and is easy to peel off the floor when the move is complete.
