When cleaning our homes many have a list to help ensure they are thorough. However, on many people’s chore list you may never see “clean the mattresses.” Mattresses should be professionally cleaned once a year and maintained monthly. It in been proven that a dirty mattress can affect health as well as a good night’s sleep. DM Carpet Cleaning would like to share why mattresses should be regularly cleaned and how to properly maintain clean mattresses.
Dirt, Urine Stains, Dust Mites & More in Mattresses
The average person will spend a third of their life sleeping in their beds. As sleeping isn’t a major activity, most people never think their mattresses get dirty. Dirt, sweat and bodily oil may only affect the surface bedding which can easily be washed. However, when little ones have their accidents or when spills occur on the bed, the mess can soak deep into the mattress. Not only do spills make their way deep into the mattress, reports and studies have proven that dead skin cells and hair have also found their way into the mattress. Where you find dead skin or hair, you will also find dust mites. Dust mites are a fact of human life. They feed on our dead skin and hair. However, if left unchecked, they can populate and begin having unpleasant results. Dust mites shed their own skin, and leave behind feces that become airborne. We later breathe in their waste which triggers allergies. Our own sweat and body oils also can lead to bacteria which can lead to a number of skin irritations. There are a number of substances found in or on a mattress which is why it is necessary to have mattresses cleaned. By having your mattresses professionally cleaned every one to three years, you can help prevent and reduce the number of dust mites and bacteria living in your mattress. Along with professional cleaning it is equally important to do maintenance cleaning. After having your mattresses professionally cleaned, do monthly maintenance cleaning.
How to Maintain Cleanliness of Mattress
It is encouraged to have your bedding cleaned weekly and mattresses cleaned monthly to ensure a healthier environment and better sleep. When cleaning the mattress, remove all bedding and wash it using hot water and dry it using high heat. Next you will want to start by vacuuming your mattresses thoroughly. Make sure to vacuum all sides of the mattresses to remove as many dust mites as possible. Don’t turn over the mattress just yet. First clean the recently used side with a disinfectant. A combination of vinegar and water will kill most bacteria, or you can even use diluted bleach if you are the thorough type. Let the mattress dry, sprinkle baking soda over the mattress for 30 minutes then vacuum. Flip the mattress over and change the top to the bottom. You’ll want to spread out the sleeping pattern wear whenever possible to help extend the life of the mattress. Next, vacuum the other side. Again use a disinfectant on the surface of the mattress. If you need to control odors sprinkle baking soda and let it set for 30 minutes to an hour.
