As we endure cooler temperatures especially, enthusiastic coffee drinkers will commonly reach for the warm soothing and stimulating cup of a fresh brew most mornings. Drinking a cup or two, or three to get you started in the morning, or simply sipping on the delicious beverage all day increases the risk of spilling your beloved drink on the carpets. No matter if you are in a rush or not, it is vital you treat the coffee spill instantly. The longer the coffee soaks into the carpet, the harder it will be for you to get out, and more likely odors will develop. Bearing this in mind, we at DM Carpet Cleaning would like to take the opportunity to provide an option on how to clean up the coffee from your carpets.
How to Make Coffee Stains on Carpet Vanish
1) Immediately blot the coffee spill. Use your choice of paper towels or a clean cloth and blot up as much coffee as possible. Be sure to blot the exterior of the spill first and work your way to the center. This technique will keep the coffee from spreading outward and seeping deeper into the fibers. If you find the coffee stain is old and dry, lightly dampen the area, and blot as mentioned earlier.
2) Create the cleaning solution. In a bucket or squirt bottle, combine 2 cups of warm water (not hot), 1 tsp of liquid dish soap and 1 tsp of white vinegar. Apply the mixture accordingly without over saturating. With a dry cloth, blot in between the applications and repeat the steps until the stain is removed.
3) Resist scrubbing and rubbing carpet. When you tending to the coffee spill, do not attack the spill with rubbing and scrub tactics. Doing this will only encourage the fibers absorb more coffee, the spill to spread outwardly, and push the coffee deep in the fibers. If you need to concentrate the cleaner into targeted fibers of the carpet use your fingers and use minimal pressure to work it in.
4) If the carpet stain persists. If the above-mentioned steps result in the coffee spot being lighter, try combining baking soda and water. With the consistency of toothpaste, add a few drops at a time to about ½ cup of baking soda until it is a paste. Spread the mixture generously onto the carpet and leave it to soak into the carpet until it is completely dry. Once dry, vacuum the dried particulates, any potential odors and stain should be vacuumed with the paste.
