How to Clean, Prepare & Repair Chipped Ceramic or Porcelain Tile in Johns Creek, GA

Tile floors come in a wide variety of colors and material types. Tile adds a unique and beautiful look to any home. They provide a waterproof and durable surface as well. Tile is also very easy to clean and maintain. However, over time, both tile and grout may require a deep and professional cleaning. After you invest in buffing, polishing and cleaning your home tile, occasionally the tile gets chipped. When the tile chips, it can make a clean floor still look dirty. Many assume there is no other option but to eventually replace damaged and chipped tile. DM Carpet Cleaning would like to share another option and walk you through the steps of repairing chipped tile.

Chipped Tile Preparation

Step 1. To repair your home’s chipped tile, begin by cleaning the surface area of the damaged tiles. Use a mild soap mixture with warm water to clean the surface area. Avoid using any other cleaner or chemicals that can prevent the paint from adhering to the tile.
Step 2. Make sure after washing the surface that you rinse it thoroughly with plain water. Make sure all the soap is out of the cracks or chipped areas.
Step 3. After cleaning and rinsing, give the area time to dry. You also want the area to be heated. You can dry and heat the tile quickly using a hairdryer. Use the hair dryer for about 15 minutes to make sure the surface is hot enough.

Priming and Painting Tile

Step 1. With a crafting oil-based primer and sealer, use a thin paintbrush or a Q-Tip to apply the primer onto the chipped areas on the tile. Make sure the primer stays within the chip and avoid the surface of the tile. The primer can discolor the tile and will draw attention to the repairs done.
Step 2. After the primer has been applied, give the primer about 2 hours to dry before you continue. Once the primer is dry use a high-gloss oil paint that matches the color of the tile. Only use a small amount of the paint. Do not fill in the depth of the crack just yet.
Step 3. Allow around 3 hours for the paint to dry. At this time inspect the paint and see if more paint is needed. You want to make sure the paint covers the entire chipped area and matches or comes really close to the tile’s color.

Applying Epoxy to Ceramic or Porcelain Tile

Step 1. Using a clear waterproof marine epoxy, follow the products mixing instruction and begin mixing the epoxy.
Step 2. You can use a toothpick or a very small tool to apply the epoxy on top of the paint or chip. Make sure you now fill in the depth of the crack until it is level with the rest of the tile. Avoid excessive covering as it makes the repair more noticeable. Again, make sure the epoxy is level with the tile.
Step 3. It will take 1 hour for the epoxy to finish drying. Avoid touching the area or allowing any heavy traffic on the tile for at least 24 hours.
